WWE's Double Standard Is Becoming Impossible to Ignore
CM Punk isn't the problem—WWE's booking philosophy is. WWE continues to reward the same established stars with championship opportunities while expecting everyone else to climb the ladder. If the company wants fans to invest in new main-event talent, it has to let Sami Zayn enjoy the meaningful title reign he's spent years earning.
What’s the verdict?
I made it all the way to CM Punk's entrance.
Then I turned the TV off.
That wasn't because I dislike CM Punk. He's one of the biggest stars of his generation and one of the best talkers the business has ever seen.
The problem isn't Punk.
The problem is how WWE books him.
Raw opened with Seth Rollins addressing his upcoming SummerSlam match against Roman Reigns. Before long, LA Knight interrupted and pointed out something that many fans have been thinking.
Both of them were eliminated in the opening round of the King of the Ring tournament.
Yet somehow...
Seth Rollins still ends up with a world title opportunity.
That's a fair criticism.
Then, by the end of the night, WWE doubled down.
With Cody Rhodes sidelined due to injury, Sami Zayn needed a new challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship. Enter CM Punk.
A man who hadn't wrestled—or even appeared on WWE television—for roughly three months after WrestleMania.
And just like that...
He's handed a championship match.
Why?
Because the show is in Chicago.
That's not a storyline.
That's fan service.
Meanwhile, you've got wrestlers busting their tails week after week, trying to climb the rankings, win tournaments, build momentum, and prove they deserve an opportunity. Then someone who's been absent for months walks back through the curtain and immediately jumps to the front of the line.
How is that supposed to make the rest of the roster matter?
This has become one of WWE's biggest creative problems.
The company continues to revolve around the same handful of names. Whether it's Punk, Rollins, Cody, Roman, or a select few others, they're almost always within arm's reach of a championship, regardless of what they've done lately.
Everyone else has to earn it.
Or at least they're told they do.
Sami Zayn, on the other hand, finally won the biggest prize of his career. After years of coming up short, he reached the mountaintop, and his reward should be a meaningful championship reign—not immediately becoming another stepping stone for a bigger star.
I'd like to see Sami hold that title for at least six months.
Personally?
I'd go even further.
I'd love to see him walk into WrestleMania next year as World Heavyweight Champion...and walk out with the championship still around his waist.
Because if WWE wants fans to invest in new main-event stars, they have to stop cutting their legs out from under them the moment an established name becomes available.
CM Punk didn't need this title match.
Sami Zayn needs this title reign.

There are parts of this I agree with, but the main take loses me. I think fans would turn on this pretty fast.

Not buying this one. I usually agree with a lot of the stuff on here, but this feels like blaming the wrong part of the problem.

This one is a home run. I don’t even have a counterargument. Do this tomorrow.

This might be the first article here that made me say ‘what the hell are you watching?’ out loud. Hard pass.

Maybe, but WWE has tried the safer version of this already and it didn’t really fix anything.

100 percent. I’d put this on a giant sign outside creative and make everybody walk past it before they go to work.

Glad somebody finally said it. Wrestling fans argue around this stuff all the time, but the basic point here is dead on.

I’m with you on this one. The frustrating part is that the fix feels obvious once you lay it out like this.
